Celebrating community

Machine: D.I.Wire Pro
Client: Greenmeme Studio

When art meets technology

The Office of Arts & Culture of the City of Charlotte commissioned a fascinating 20’ tall stainless steel wire sculpture made in part using the D.I.Wire Pro.

Artists Freyja Bardell and Brian Howe of Greenmeme Studio, the visionaries behind this project, used 3-D face scans of community members in designing their award winning sculpture. After creating sections in profile to form each individual’s face, Bardell and Howe used the D.I.Wire Pro to bend each profile section. The result of their work is a stunning and dynamic installation that changes with the view angle.

“Using a relatively new machine, capable of CNC wire bending (created by Pensa Labs), we embarked on a challenge not yet done at such a scale. Thousands of unique profiles were bent and assembled.”

An award winning project

This interactive and captivating sculpture shines as a celebration of the Charlotte community and was recently recognized as the Merit Award winner in the annual CodaWorx Public Art Competition.

Congratulations to Freyja Bardell and Brian Howe!  We are amazed and humbled by what you were able to create, and thrilled to be a part of it.
